Introduction
The state of Kedah spans approximately 9, 425 sq. km in the northern part of the Peninsular and together with Perlis, Perak and Kelantan, shares a common border with neighbouring Thailand. It has the distinction of being the "Rice Bowl of Malaysia", the Kedah-Perlis rice plains produce more than half of the country's home grown rice supply. Alor Setar, the state capital, is the seat of Government and the business centre of the state.
The flat expanse of padi fields against a backdrop of rolling hills provides a picture of utter serenity that lulls the senses. Off its western shore, are clusters of sun-drenched islands that comprise the legendary islands of Langkawi. Kedah also owes its fame to the archeological discoveries at the Bujang Valley, which furnished evidence of the existence of an early civilization dating back to the 6th century A.D. With its islands, legends, historical relics, hill stations and scenic aterfalls, Kedah offers the visitor a variety of sights, sounds and fun-filled activities - from beach combing to diving, water skiing, picnicking or merely to take in the sights...

Langkawi Geopark Kedah – A Treasure Trove

"An archipelago of 99 islands sits out in the Andaman Sea. By far the largest of the islands is the eponymous Pulau Langkawi with a population of some 45,000."

North of the straits of Melaka in the southern Andaman Sea near the border between Malaysia and Thailand lies Langkawi. The breathtaking island offers visitors a setting of natural beauty and tranquility. With white beaches and limestone hills, lush vegetation filled with exotic flora and fauna to attract nature lovers, Langkawi is an idyllic holiday destination.
Langkawi means Eagle Island as some put it. It is from these birds that Langkawi is said to derive it’s name from. Indeed, there is a great abundance of eagles in the area. The island was at one time touted as “ Malaysia’s best kept secret”.
This luscious island remained a sleepy backwater long until 1987 when it was granted tax free status and the island’s airport and ferry links were improved. Resorts and 5-star hotels line the beaches luring direct flights from as far as Europe and Japan.
Langkawi island has recently been rebranded to “Langkawi Geopark” to better reflect the island’s recognition by UNESCO as a World’s First Duty Free Geopark. The spellbound mystical island is also opulent in history and myths. Mount Matchincang, Kilim Geoforest and Pulau Tasik Dayang Bunting (Island of the Pregnant Maiden Lake) truly has what it takes to make Langkawi the number one geopark in the world.
Come to Langkawi and experience Eagle Feeding, Mangrove Forest Tour, snorkeling & baby shark feeding, day sail and cruise of the 99 islands and many more….
