The Honourable Dato' Seri Mahdzir Bin Khalid continue to develop as a charismatic and excellent leader when he was appointed as Political Secretary to YAB Dato' Seri Abdullah bin Haji Ahmad Badawi, the Prime Minister of Malaysia from the year 2000 until March 2004. He was then chosen as the Barisan Nasional's election candicate for Dewan Undangan Negeri Pedu, and won. He was appointed as Ahli Majlis Mesyuarat Kerajaan Negeri Kedah Darul Aman (EXCO), given the trust on Agriculture, Rural Development Portfolio (Portfolio Pertanian, Pembangunan Luar Bandar) and State Cooperative Development (Pembangunan Koperasi Negeri). |

He had his early education at Sekolah Kebangsaan Jabi then went on for his secondary school education at SMK Pokok Sena and SMK Dato' Syed Omar, Alor Star. His educational excellence enable him to be selected to further his studies at the Universiti Sains Malaysia(USM) . In 1983 he graduated from USM earning the Bachelor of Education with Honours. During his higher education period, he showed tremendous leadership skill when he was elected as the Vice President to the USM Student Representative Council (1981 - 1982).
Upon graduation he was given the opportunity to serve as an Education Officer in Sabah until he was appointed as Principal of SMK Gadong, Beaufort, Sabah. During this period The Honourable Dato' Seri Mahdzir Bin Khalid continue to develop good leadership quality and his hardwork take notice back in his home state. He was called back to serve the Kedah State as Special Officer (Development), during the tenure of then Kedah Chief Miniter, Dato' Seri Amar DiRaja Tan Sri Dato' Seri Osman bin Haji Aroff. The Honourable Dato' Seri Mahdzir bin Khalid was then elected as Pengarah Seranta (Seranta Director) of Land and Corporation Development Ministry (Kementerian Tanah dan Koperasi) from 1998 to 2000. |

The Honourable Dato' Seri Mahdzir bin Khalid was later entrusted as acting Chief Minister of Kedah, temporarily replacing Kedah Chief Minister The Honourable Dato' Seri Setia DiRaja Dato' Seri Utama Syed Razak bin Syed Zain who was on medical leave for 3 months. The period was further extended for another 3 months until 16 January 2006, and later offically appointed as the 8th Chief Minister of Kedah by YAB Dato' Seri Abdullah bin Haji Ahmad Badawi, the Prime Miniter of Malaysia with the blessing of His Royal Highness Al Sultan Almu'tasimu Billahi Muhibbuddin Tuanku Alhaj Abdul Halim Mu'adzam Shah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Badlishah, Sultan of Kedah Darul Aman.
